UP) A bank employe foiled a holdup attempt Thursday by running away from a bandit who had pressed a gun to his back. The gunman and a companion fled empty-handed in an automobile.

Phillip Klinkhammer noticed a car parked in front of the Bank of Franksville when he arrived at the Bank of Franksville about 9 a.m. The hood was open and a man wearing white coveralls apparently was tinkering with the motor. Another man was seated in the car. As Klinkhammer started to unlock the door, the man in coveralls pressed a gun against his back, ordered him to enter the bank and open the vault. Klinkhammer protested that he didn't! know the vault combination but gunman told him: "I know you know the combination; I've been watching you for two months." Klinkhammer suddenly turned and ran up the street, meeting a rural mail carrier, Edward Runge, about half a block away.

They saw the bandit car roar away toward Racine, seven miles east of here. They described it as a dark green 1952 Olsmobile which had no rear plates. Klinkhammer normally arrives 15 to 30 minutes before other bank employes.
